The Lorraine Building, 128-130 Genesee Street. Built in the early 1900's, and previously known as the Mohican Building. A 1960's fire led to renovations that resulted in the facade seen at left. Recent work throught the Facade Improvement Program has restored the original cornice. The center window has returned and the adjacent windows were restored to their original sizes. A new canopy was also added.
The City of Auburn has designated past loan repayments, originally granted by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, for revitalization of the downtown area. A small pool of funds now exists as a revolving loan fund for facade improvements. The City will fund up to 50% of projects, and has established maximum financial contribution at $7,500. The City will negotiate the terms of the loan with the property or business owner at 3% APR.
The Facade Improvement Program has made significant impact on the look of the downtown area. Masonry, awnings, signage, lighting, painting and storefronts conforming to the Downtown Design Guidelines are all covered under this program. To learn more about the Downtown Facade Program, or to request an application, please contact the Office of Planning and Economic Development at (315)255-4115.
